Summary

The Accountant will report to the Controller and support the Finance Team with a wide range of tasks and projects. This role will be full-time (37.5 hours per week) and will be based in the Silver Spring, MD office with a hybrid work schedule based on team needs (currently the finance team is in the office two days per week).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct monthly reconciliations of accounts as assigned, record monthly entries, and maintain various balance sheet account schedules, including all bank accounts, prepaid and accrued expenses, accounts payable, and fixed assets;
  • Maintain accounts payable vendor files and update vendor records in NC’s system of record;
  • Manage routing and approval of vendor invoices and input invoices into system and process check and electronic payments;
  • Timely deposit incoming checks into the appropriate bank accounts;
  • Enter bank deposits of incoming checks and electronic payments into accounting system;
  • Manage monthly employee credit card reimbursement requests and reconciliations;
  • Work with Finance team on continued system improvements, such as testing, implementing, and utilizing new systems and processes to modernize and improve the accounting function (such as moving checks to electronic payments);
  • Account for interest/income from NC’s marketable securities portfolio, including mark-to-market entries;
  • Generate and file 1099 tax forms for eligible vendors;
  • Support the preparation and issuance of the annual audit;
  • Manage bank accounts;
  • Initiate electronic payments (wires, ACH, transfers) for approval;
  • Ensure proper accounting record retention;
  • Prepare special financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends;
  • Maintain customer confidence and protect operations by keeping financial information confidential;
  • Cross train with team members to serve as a back-up for other finance team members;
  • Other duties as assigned as NC’s business model evolves.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BS or BA in Business, Finance, or Accounting or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of direct experience performing accounting and financial analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including the skills to manipulate data in Excel, create and modify formulas. Familiarity with Oracle NetSuite preferred but not essential.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with others and values the different contributions people make.

 

Compensation

Salary will be commensurate with experience with a target range of $65,000 to $75,000. Excellent employer-paid benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, paid holidays, unlimited PTO, life insurance, disability, 6% contribution of eligible salary to 401(k), transportation subsidy, matching contribution plan to eligible nonprofits, and bonus potential. Due to the nature of this position, background checks (including verification of education and employment, as well as criminal record) and credit checks will be conducted as a condition of employment.
